Traditional language instruction approaches each foreign language as a whole, isolated from other foreign languages, and stresses both production and comprehension. But language learning is quite difficult and time-consuming. We hope to accelerate the process. We simplify our task by concentrating on comprehension, not production, just like the prototypical Norwegian mentioned above. Furthermore, we are concentrating on written comprehension, at least in the first stages of the project, partly for practical purposes. Finally, our task is simplified by the fact that we are concentrating on teaching languages to people who already speak closely related languages; the project encompasses only Germanic languages and is aimed at people who already know one. By focusing on the differences among the Germanic languages (and breezing over those points on which they are alike), we hope to facilitate rapid acquisition of semicomprehension of written language. The initial stages have largely involved organizing the relevant differences among the seven languages selected (English, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and Icelandic). The projected end product is software, utilizing the multidimensional nature of computerized information to allow the complex network of relations among the seven languages to be displayed in a coherent way; the database will contain information on all seven of the languages and how they relate, in various aspects of their grammar, vocabulary, and phonology, to each of the other six, but a learner need only display one pair of languages at a time, one as the base and one as the target. The product envisioned would be simple enough for any adult learner (who already commands one of the seven languages) to use independently, without instruction, yet flexible enough to contain the type of detailed comparative information that would be of interest to a philologist.
